The new look

Postby agent_orange » Tue Jun 11, 2013 2:24 am

Hey folks,

After loads of delays, frustrations & me generally being lazy... we have finally rolled out a working new look!! :obscene-drinkingcheers:

...and we did it before the OC rolled out their new look :teasing-neener: (Cue MM acting like a kid on Xmas... or more specifically this kid)

This is not the final release, some things need a few tweaks. But most importantly, we want you guys to try it out and let us know what you think.

Now you might be wondering "what new look?? Everythings the same". That's because you need to enable it. Follow these steps:

1. Go to User Control Panel (Right hand corner, not far from Logout button)
2. When that has loaded, select Board Preferences from the left.
3. Then you should see an option called My Board Style, from the drop down, change "Mazda Mender" to "Darker" or "Lighter"
4. Hit submit

If you want to change back to the old look (which we will eventually phase), use the same steps as above, but for step 3, change "Lighter" or "Darker" back to "Mazda Mender"

Please leave your comments and suggestions here.

Sorry, but I dont like it, white on black is hard to work with and really it wasn't broke, so why fix it? Had to change it back almost straight away.

We have a "light" version of the same design with dark text on white background.

Well, I think as long as people have an option then thats OK. In my job I am often asked by clients to comment on web site designs and whilst its nice to be creative, the key thing is it has to be read, and easily read. Also with the increased use of phones and tablets for browsing and its important to remember what the site will look like and how easy it will be to read on a small screen.

There will be 3 or 4 options ,so you can pick the board you want to work with that you feel right with, no one is saying that this is it we are going to be giving a choice for members to choose, which i do not see a problem with, if you do not like it ,pick another or stay with the old board/look.

OK, hold on, AO asked for comments and I gave my thoughts as requested. What was not mentioned was that there would be options, that makes sense and means that people can select what works best for them, dependant on how they view and use the forum. The original post also said that the current look would 'eventually phased' which I understood to mean being eventually phased out and the impression was that the example look would be the only option.

I'm afraid I'm with Nick on this one, the new look doesn't work for me - at least not at the moment. In part it is the fact that it is very dark but in a large part it is the fact that I find it very distracting. We have a subtle pallet of grey and blue, which in and of themselves work fine, but then we have logos with strong orange (Autolink) and red (the main MM logo) which really jump out of the page at you. It just all feels a bit hard work at the moment. I know it sounds a bit harsh (I'm assuming you would rather have honesty) but it feels like a theme was just dropped on without any any real consideration of how the whole site would work together in terms of 'branding'.

It may be that I'm being overly picky, this is just my first impression and I guess I'll stick with it over the original version as the board interface layout does seem to be a bit better. I also recognise that this is day one and most likely you will be continuing to work on it.

So overall I would say good effort but needing a bit more work to really hit the spot.

Hmmm...I also discovered that there is no link to take you from a post back to the 'unread posts' page. So now I have to go back to the main forum page and then select the unread posts. A minor thing I know but it means an extra click, an extra page load, so it is going to slow down my browsing quite a lot - and the same for anyone else who uses unread posts.

It is still there. To the right of the Logout button there's a down arrow. Hover your mouse over that ;) Also, try hovering your mouse over the home icon on the top left corner just underneath "It is currently <date & time>"

But yeh, thanks for your comments :handgestures-thumbup: You have raised some valid and interesting points re. the header. I agree that the MM logo should probably be better blended one way or the other.

The only thing I can't find is the "path" to the current thread i.e. for this thread, on the old scheme at the top of the page the following was displayed:
Board index » Administration » Suggestions
As I pretty much exclusively use "View unread posts" and rarely take notice of where that takes me, I find it useful to be able to refer to that link to show me where the current thread is located.
I can see that I can hover over the home button and that will show the location highlighted but I often use the forum on my mobile so that isn't really much of an option.

I'm a bit divided on the colour scheme at the moment. I'm going to give it a while before I decide though as it might grow on me (I'm old so I don't like change )
