So....it's not the ICV or the Throttle Body.
I was having a new clutch fitted when it was spotted that the "switch" that lets the ECU know that the car is in gear, was discovered as completely broken.
This was replaced.
It now idles spot on. Dead on 900rpm.

Yep...I had checked that and clutch in or out made no difference to idle

Idle drop with pressing the clutch is common from a dead or busted clutch switch.

Thanks for closing this one out, it's always appreciated. Another source of a rough idle issue and added to the (long) list.
Interesting that when this and other sensors fail it seems to result in a rough and erratic idle. Sounds like the ECU software has a bale out clause if it detects an error that it cannot relate to a specific error code. Do the later cars with OBD have as many issues with rough idle?
