So there I was top down, lovely sunny day, maximising the MX5 , when I had queue for some lights. What pullls up behind me but a Transit van with a very noisy diesel engine. COMPLETE LY ruined my quiet time. Next queue for the lights I was joined by a. noisy VW Passat diesel.
Is there no peace out there.......

It's worse when the transit is in front of you and leaves an enormous black cloud that you have to drive through when it pulls away and each time it changes gear

When serviced well/correctly, diesel engines don't knock and smoke, it just goes to show how lazy and tight fisted the owners are for letting it get that bad.

Ahem...
I've been know to deliberately bog down the diesel dog in 4th at 1100rpm and give it a bootfull... Usually a boxster trying to climb in my boot though, never a fiver

when i had my 320d (chipped and no particle filters) it was great putting it in 5th and flooring the pedal at 40mph when someone was tailgating it was like a fogger system haha
I remember the days when ‘Blue Ray’ was an elderly gentleman who drowned in our local swimming pool.

I have a 1.9tdi 130 Superb, remapped as my daily. The cost of fuel has forced this, as I could not afford the mileage I do in a petrol car.
Mine is serviced every 8000 miles for peace of mind. It returns 60mpg on a long run which I'm happy with. But you plant the pedal and it churrrrrns out smoke. Nothing to so with being tight fisted.
That's what these diesels do. Unless you have a more modern one with silly DPFs. But then all that smog and soot, eventually clogs that DPF and costs you a small fortune, eating all savings you made running a diesel in the first place. I'll stick with my smokey vag PD for now as it's an excellent engine. Until it goes bang, which is unlikely for a long time, or until petrol halves in price.

i have an audi a4 s-line 170 remapped to 220 now but not leaving the mx5 scene completely even had m-m in it the other day and he did not complain .... well apart from the fact i could not work out how to use the satnav lol its even quiet and does not smoke like the bmw ...
some boring stuff ahead
the 2.0tdi i have is actually the same block as the 1.9 tdi vw engine but the only difference is the rod size to create a 2.0 displacement and the fact the head is 16v instead of 8v for more power , the downside is the 16v came in 3 different heads A,B,C (end codes) and the reason was modifications due to the A heads cracking or warping and the C heads been generally indestructible , i have the A head and had to re skim the head and block due to warping issues caused by a failed thermostat , also these audi 2.0tdi's suffer from balance'r shaft failures due to audi trying to be over enthusiastic on vibration reduction by fitting balancer shaft gear driven type oil pumps which fail taking out the turbo and sometimes the crank bearings . this is something i have also had to change and fitted the 1.9 tdi 130 oil pump which is just a standard chain driven pump thats a simple design and is pretty much bullet proof and runs at the same pressure. i really do admit i miss the fun and madness from the mx5's but ive got to do near 400 miles a week and the fuel bill with the mx5's is just to much as i have gone from paying near £70 a week to £35 with more power and more space but with a sacrifice of less fun

Yeah the later 2.0 from what I've read are no way near as reliable as the older PD 1.9s. We have 2 in the household, one is on 180,000 miles and you'd never know it by the way it pulls and drives. Mine is on 135,000 and still (touch wood) never lets me down and pulls like a train.

with the newer b8 models they went back to basics and they tend to be generally ok no afaik but they have probably messed with something else to make that unreliable lol
