Mk1 1.6/1.8 Fuel filter change

The very first thing you MUST do is chock up the front wheels. Next, loosen the back wheel on the drivers side. Then, using the jacking point you must jack up until the wheel is no longer in contact with the floor, get her as high as you can with out it being unstable and dangerous , as it is fiddly if sat to low.
Secure the roadster on an axle stand.
Take off the wheel nuts and remove the wheel. You will see a guard, remove the guard using a 10mm socket. The pictures bellow will help you if you are unsure on how to remove the guard.....

If you look at the last picture you will see another guard. Do NOT completely remove this guard as there is an easier way to work around it. Below is a closer picture of the guard;....

Once all of the screws above have been removed you can simply slide the guard out of your way;....

In the last picture, on the left hand side, the fuel filter is visible! Now, before you proceed any further you MUST go and get something to catch any fuel that decides to spill out (there will more than likely be some rouge fuel, so this is an important step!)
Once you have something to catch falling fuel, you need to use the tools my dad told you about (clamps) to clamp down the pipes going into the filter and coming out of it as indicated by the picture below......

Once both clamps are on, it should look like this;.....

After clamping you have probably noticed that there are 4 clips in total. However, only 2 are important now that we've clamped the pipes. The 2 clips closest to the filter should be moved backwards along the pipe (towards the clamp) using some pointed pliers. Some pictures went missing so if you look at the following picture the red circles show the clips in their original position and the black arrows indicate where you should move them to.....

The red circle on the following picture indicates where the bolt is on the bracket that holds the filter in place. You should remove this with a 10mm spanner or socket. Once the bolt has been removed you need to pull the bracket slightly apart so that you can just slide the filter out. (Please note that the last 2 steps can be done the other way round. But, personally this is way we prefer).....

After removing the 10mm bolt, starting at the bottom, remove the pipe from the fuel line (at the bottom) and (the filter itself at the top). The edited picture shows which way you should pull (indicated by the black arrow)......

Hopefully you've put the fuel catcher in the right place and there isn't fuel all over the floor. Anyway, now that the filter is out, you get your new filter (see pic below) and slide it into the bracket still attached to the car, making sure that the lines on the filter match up to the lines on the bracket......

Once the new filter is sat correctly in the bracket you can now slide the pipes back on. Then move the clips back with the pliers. Before you remove the clamps you need to push the bracket back together again with the pointed pliers and finger tighten the bolt back in until you feel it bite the thread. After the bolt has grabbed the thread you can tighten it back up with your 10mm spanner or socket. Now you can remove the clamps. Leaving it looking something like this;.....

Follow the first few steps but in reverse for putting everything back together, e.g. Move the guard back into place and screw up the screws. Now the filter guard is back on you can get the other guard and put that into place and finger tighten them up, then tighten with your 10mm. Put the wheel on, finger tighten the wheel nuts, jack back down, tighten wheel, unchock front wheels; done!

I will do one for the Mk 2/2.5 next and add more pic's to this how to. Also, as we lost loads from of the camera for some reason???
Congratulations! You have just changed your fuel filter! Give yourself a big pat on the back and proudly say "I'm a MazdaMender!"
