First MX5 - 1990 Eunos 1.6

Postby willson » Wed Jun 14, 2017 8:39 am

Hi, thought I should introduce myself after buying a few bits off of Autolink :)

I'm a fan of Japanese cars, this is my 7th Japanese car in a row. Mostly Toyotas up till now.
UK mk2 MR2, Jap 6speed TT Supra, UK mk2 MR2, DC2 ITR, Civic 1.5 Vtec, Gen 6 Celica GT and now the '5.

After test driving 3 '5s I was still very unsure that it was for me, but thought I needed to give it a proper go so just bit the bullet and am really enjoying it now.

Got a list of mostly small jobs to do, mainly interior and cosmetic tweaks (de-chroming) and tidying bits. Fit new stereo etc.
The car came on 16" Euphonic wheels, but I've put the daisys back on, after spraying and buying tyres. The daisys are a lot lighter!
Got an issue with headlight switch at the moment, but I'm getting a new 'combination stalk' from Autolink so will hopefully sort that.

1993 1.6 Eunos Roadster (gone)
1998 UK Mk 2 1.6 (gone)
2003 1.8 SVT Sport (shouldnt have sold it)
1991 1.6 Eunos Roadster with a bit of bling.

Life is a journey, best travelled topless in an MX5!!

Cheers :D
I installed my Kenwood BT73 earlier. I was sceptical of the 'hanging off the tombstone' method, all my other stereos have been mounted to the 'car' and then a fascia just covers the gaps, but it went fine.
Should have got a pic I guess!
Anyway, nice surprise that the speakers are pretty good and all seem to be working, including the head rest speakers :)

I had a look at the steering wheel which I need to remove to replace the stalk switches.
There is no nut on the steering wheel and it looks like the thread for the nut is damaged :(

Whats the best way forward? Is it hard to replace the column? Thinking about trying to get the thread repaired by a specialist.
I don't have any experience with 'oily bits', I generally only do stereo / interior / trim type simple work :/

Yeah someone as had a good go at that...if your lucky you might get a OE nylon lock nut to catch and re-cut the thread...but i would not use it until the wheel is locked down and solid.

Okay, thanks. I'll try the nut tomorrow and see what happens. Reckon I'll be looking at a replacement column though :/

So, if I cant get the nut on (I'm not optimistic) , is it hard to change the column?
