What you put in, you'll get back ten fold
***** THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THE SITE AND HELPING YOU,OTHERWISE IT CLOSES AND ALL THIS ON LINE GARAGE IS GONE FOR GOOD*****

Greetings and welcome to menders, this site was built for every owner that might need her to help keep those bills low and also keep them on the road where they belong, she is run by very passionate enthusiasts owners for passionate enthusiastic owners, see her like a on line garage, there is a lot of tech stuff hopefully explained for everyone to use, if there is something you cannot get your head around, or you feel that there is a strong walk through guide missing that needs creating by one of us or from yourselves, please let us know, we are also on false book and youtube, which as short tech vids to help, and again if you feel there is a vid that would help please get it touch.
the menders is free, but like everything there is a cost to run things and bills( we are just happy its not a heating cost), so if we have saved you hundreds, please throw a small donation in the pot so we can keep on going to carry on helping others in the same way .

*** we are currently looking for a sponsor for this year, so if you have the passion and can see this sites worth to everyone , please get in touch and step forward to help***

And thank heavens that we are now on the way back up the brighter ,warmer longer days, "come on summer", and lets see those project builds.

Mk 1/2.2.5 A/C fan to a dual cooling fans

Postby Mazda Mender » Sun Sep 04, 2016 11:28 am

This "How to Guide" will cover adding an A/C fan to the existing radiator cooling fan thereby giving dual cooling fans for far better radiator cooling (A/C = Air Conditioning)

If your Mazster was not built with A/C then this is a great upgrade and also for those ripping out their A/C it allows you to keep the A/C fan for this cooling upgrade.
With the Mk 2/2.5 built without A/C, I found that the MK 1 A/C fan was the best device to use with their attached socket and plug, but you must make sure it comes with them to make this upgrade neat and easy for the fan to be removed easily if the rad should ever need to be removed at a later date, therefore washing line wires across the engine bay is a no go,,,we want the installation to be to the usual Mender's high standards.

In this "How to Guide" we are using a Mk 2.5 as the car to be modified but it is the same procedure for all earlier versions. if you are removing the A/C and reusing what you have, please make sure you isolate the OE A/C supply loom by cutting wires and insulating the wire ends and neatly refixing the wires out of harms way.
A s/hand MK 1 A/C fan with the matching plug and socket and some supply loom to help with connecting the fan was sent from Autolinkmx5 to assist in this project and to assist in the preparation of this guide.....

Tools needed...
1 x mazster
A/C fan plug/socket and 4 to 5 " of loom.
Trunking
Soldering iron
Solder
Solder mat
Heat shrink
Heat source for heat shrink
Roll of electrical tape
3' of twin cable
Wire strippers
pointed pliers
1/4 drive ratchet
1/4 drive short extension
1/4 drive 10mm socket /
1/4 drive 8mm socket only if you need to remove the fan blades.
4 x 10mm head bolts for holding the fan in place two at the bottom two at the top( get them with the fan)
Copper grease
Pipe clip removal tool,(Mk 1 1.6 only)
Antifreeze ,(Mk 1 1.6 only)
Crimper and connections if doing it that way

AS you can see the blades have been removed by removing the centre 8mm nut and pulling the blades off the motor spindle for spraying, reattach the blades, ready for fitting once the frame is dry if they need painting.

So now to the Mazster...

Pop and prop the bonnet open and run some twin core cable from one side to the other at the front of the behind the nose cone under the slam panel split the twin core and strip some outer cover off the connecting wires ready for soldering after threading and cutting everything to length...

Next unbolt the cooling fan by removing the 2 x 10mm bolts at the top only, hinge the fan forward and get some pointed pliers and unclip the cable lug, free it from the back of the frame at the top, then do the same for the middle one from the front and unplug the power plug from the socket,,,,,remove the fan, now insert the A/C fan into the gap that the cooling fan was removed from and move it over and under the top rad hose and bolt it into place with the 2 x 10mm head bolts at the bottom and the 2 X 10mm bolts for the top, applying copper grease to the threads of the bolts or nuts first, on the MK 1 1.6 you will need to remove the air trunking and top rad hose to do this mod/upgrade so there will be no need to remove the cooling fan on a MK 1 1.6 version for that reason.,

Once the A/C fan is in place, bolt it all down solid, refit the existing cooling fan, but at this stage do not connect the electrics, leave the cable/trunking loose as it will be easier to work on

Split the trunking on the cooling fan wires to expose the yellow and black cables that power the fan and with the wire strippers strip the outer cover away from the copper wire so we can tap in twist rap the twin core we have run to the cooling fan wires in this case (MK 2.5) yellow is live so our fresh red wire will be connected to it and black is earth so they will be joined together black to black..

Solder it all up with the soldering mat under where we are working and cover with a good covering of electrical tape, i also adding some trunking to make it look a bit more tidier and a little bit OE,...

You can now plug it all back and click the cable/trunking lugs back in place.

Now over to the A/C fan side, wires are all cut to length and the wire stripper used on the ends, slide the heat shrink onto the cable ready before we solder the connections up solid, put the solder mat under where we are working, twist the bare wires together ready for soldering up solid to the tap from the cooling fan wires that we know red is trigger live so that goes to the black with blue chaser and black will go to black with red flashes, it is very important that we get the wiring connections correct otherwise if they are the wrong way around the fan will suck rather than blow, ( Yes, I know that is open to sooooooooooooooo many jokes) :coffee: :-D

Once soldered up solid, slide your heat shrink down/up over the soldered connection and use your heat source to shrink the heat shrink over the join, I personally also wrap it in electrical tape and added trunking again for neatness and to look a bit more OE, it's all in the attention to detail that makes the difference.
