Mk1/Mk2 Interior lights mod!

Before we start if you are following this to do the same to your car these are the lights we used; they are found for a cheap price on ebay. They're called Vauxhaull boot/interior lights, they are found on almost every model of Vauxhaull. Common models include: Astra, Corsa and Insignia. Below is a picture of the lights as a reference for searching.

First things first, locate the following piece of trim inside the cab. (Ignoring the wires)

Remove the trim, this is easily done with your fingers.

Once both pieces of trim have been removed, make yourself a cardboard cut out of the trim with a hole cut in the middle big enough for the light to fit though.

This next bit requires extreme concentration (so Mm did it). Put the template for the light over the top of the trim. Now, with a sharp object engrave a line into the trim (following the outer line of the template as demonstrated in the pictures below).

The red line indicates where abouts your engraved line should be. (Please keep in mind that the red line will not be 100% accurate as it was drew in 2 seconds for the soul purpose of this how to)

Tah-Dah!

Again extreme concentration take care. Using the trusty dremel cut as accurately as possible on your engraved line.

Remove the cut out piece.

The lights may not slide in first time, so using your self judgement cut some more off the trim until it fits. You do not want the lights to be too loose but at the same time you do not want it too hard to squeeze into or the trim will break.

The way you must slide them back in.

All you have to do now is wire them in. On a mk1 (you lucky lot) the wiring is already there so it's more or less plug and play. But, on a mk2 you'll have to wire from scratch and before you ask, my dad is working on posting up a wiring diagram for the mk2 and for the later Mk1 owners/ moders out there!

Good guide! Can I ask a big favour??
If you get a minute can you unscrew a door switch and ground it through an ammeter to see what the total current is with all those lights?
Would be useful to know for the courtesy light mod to make sure it can cope with the load.
(also you might want to go up to a 15A room fuse to avoid potential blowage)

Those lights are a replacement for the MK 1 standard ones as Daryls MK 1 has a MK 2 dash so lost the MK 1 interior lights, so will be using the same amps, the later Mk 1 and Mk 2's have a bonded on reversing mirror on the screen ,where as the early cars are screwed to the top of the inner windscreen frame/trim, the later Mx/roadsters have the interior light where the early mirror was fitted, so the mod is for lower lghts/foot well lights if you like.
With Daryls having a converted dash swap he has no interior light, my Mk 2's have them fitted with LEDs bulbs and footwell light which are also LED's.

Some do add them(or did) as extra lights on the Mk 1's with the dash interior lights also Jon, you could get them as an aftermarket kit many moons ago, but have not seen them for years? unless Mx5parts sell them for re-mortgage money?
