Replacing hinge Mk2 centre consul

Postby flea » Sat Jul 27, 2013 5:28 pm

Rather than replacing the whole centre console when the hinge breaks it can be replaced with a section of piano hinge.
For the purposes of the pictures I've left it in chrome so it can be seen easier. I will paint it black later.

They are known to split along this join as shown in the picture.

Remove the lid completely by removing all the screws. Once the lid is removed you'll need to cut off the plastic lip that's remaining as shown below.
Just run a stanley knife along the seam a few times and it comes away easy.

If the two parts of the hinge have come completely away from each other as mine has then don't forget to remove the lower section. You can use this as a template to cut out the sections on the piano hinge to match it. See picture below.

Cut a piece of piano hinge the the same length as the lower section. Then cut out the sections on the piano hinge to match the lower part cut out's.
Then simply fit as shown below. You can use the same screws that you removed earlier but you'll need a few extra. They are only small self tappers.
