How to remove the instrument dial cluster to replace bulbs etc...For Oliver wilson-hall

Postby Mazda Mender » Thu Oct 31, 2019 8:49 am

Like anything, everything is easy once shown....this will be a quick guide on how to remove the instrument dial clusters in a MK 1/MK 2-2.5 ( MK 3 and 4 to be added)...

Tools needed...

1 x medium phillips driver.
A pair of hands.

So Mk 1 first...

Go underneath of the stalk switch cowling and you will see 3 x phillips head screws in the recess that secures the top half of the cowl together and a threaded phillips head bolt that secures the bottom half of the cowling solid to the stalk switch body...remove them all and split the cowling cover apart with a simple pull and put both half's safe with the fittings...

Next is the two phillips head screws that hold the instrument dail cover in place which are underneath on either side, remove those and put safe...

Now we can remove the cover which is still held in place to the dash by 3 x metal push fit clips which will require a bit of gentle force to release them depending on how long it as been since the last removal , it is plastic and can be brittle, get your fingers underneath and give some sharp yangs, it will help to pop one side at a time and then the middle clip.... it will pop out, this is why we love the MK 1's everything was over engineered, once you have popped it free remove it and put safe with the screws...

Now we need to remove the 4 x phillps head screws that hold the instrument cluster in place, in all 4 corners, put the screws safe once removed...

Now here is the fun bit that no one seems to like or get there knickers in a twist?, Get hold of the cluster on both sides and pull towards you with a sharp jurk to release it from the speedo cable socket, trust me it will release, i understand why people are hesitant at first with the resistance..Then unplug the 2 electric plugs from the back( note this is the early type, the later type will have another connection to unplug for the Heated rear window warning on light, on your left on the rear)

An thats it, its out, now to just change a bulb you can just pop the speedo drive and leave the cluster plugged in and just twist the bulb holder out of the one not working, swap the bulb in the holder and put back into place again with a twist to lock back in place and turn on the lights to test, even more so if fitting crappy LED's as the are pole sensitive so my need to be a certain way in the holder to work.....

Make sure on re-fitting that you pop the speedo socket back onto the speedo clock...

And then just refit everything the same backwards from removed.

MK 2/2.5 next.....

So MK 2/2.5, this is even easier than the MK 1 as they are not built to the same over engineered standard....

Pop the top half of the stalk switch cowling apart(Yes no screws to undo) and put some where safe...

DSC02240.jpg (122.72 KiB) Viewed 2451 times

Then get your fingers under/behind the instrument cover ( yes no screws) and give some sharp yangs for the 3 x palstic holding clips to pop free one either side and one in the middle at the back....

Then remove the 4 x phillps head screws that holds the instrument cluster to the dash in each corner and put them safe....

Then you can pull the cluster towards you, the speedo is electric driven so no cable connection to pop like the mk1's, unplug the wire connection plugs which there is 3 in total, one at either side at the top and one in the centre at the top...

And thats it its out, just like the MK 1 you do not need to fully remove the cluster to just change bulbs, pulling it towards you is enough once un-screwed to just twist the blown bulb out with the holder to be replaced , refit and test.

Refit everything back in reverse order as removed.
