This Guide is for the 1993 to 1997 1.8L Eunos Roadster Dual plug/switch front fog lights and HRW switch in one unit.....This will show you how to wire past the dual OE..plug to get your HRW or front fog lights switched and working...
************CLICKING ON THE IMAGES WILL ENLARGE THEM FOR BETTER VIEWING ***************
The early 1990-92/93 1.6L Japanese ( but the 89-90 never had any plug as they were not built with a HRW) market Roadsters had a Rocker type HRW switch with a specific plug behind the dash( which in most cases was blue), to plug the switch into there was also the front fog lights plug and dimmer switch plug ...
In 1993, the 1.6L engine was finished for the Japanese market in the Eunos roadsters and the 1.8L engine Roadsters were rolled off the production line ...The HRW switch became a dual Plug with the front fog lights ( white plug) and the other plug behind the dash was for the electric door mirrors (black plug). The later '96 onwards Roadsters also gained another plug for cutting the electrics to the electric windows which was a waste of time. There is a guide on here on how to bypass and loop it and hide it away, I believe it was something to do with the American legalisation with the Miata????...
The plug is the same size as for the dimmer switch socket on the early roadsters and carried on into the MK 2/2.5's. DO NOT plug a dimmer switch into it , it will blow the side lights and interior instrument lights....
Mazda did make a patch lead but not many came with them fitted, or the rarer than rare dual push switch even rarer than fillings for hens teeth. This switch was a HRW and front fog push button switch in one. The patch lead split the dual plug so you could install two separate switches. Even the single push switch is not as easy to come by s/hand, as easy as the early rocker type switch. Although you can still get them new from Mazda for just under ÂŁ40..... The front fog light half of the patch lead is a standard rocker type fog lamp switch which you can get from a lot of place now new or s/hand.
Which now brings me to the reason for this guide...with it being a dual plug and not everyone can get their hands on a patch lead or push type HRW switch. I will show you how to connect the switches up to the correct wires using a bit of loom and some plugs so you can have the two rocker switches off the earlier HRW and front fog lamp switch...
In essence we are patching the dual plug with six wires into two six connector plugs, of which four are used on each.
Below is a sketch of the wire with colours and numbering. The numbers are based on looking at the wire entering the plug.
The sketch below shows the layout and lettering of the two individual plugs, one for Fog lights and the other for HRW. The same lettering is used on both plugs.
These sketches will be shown below to indicate the actual plugs.
The wiring is basically as shown.
Note Connectors A and D on the Fog Light and HRW plugs are not connected
The write up below will show how to connect the wiring required.
This is the dual plug behind the dash 1995 Roadster....
(1995..Note the colours on the wires).
(1996 Roadster ...wires are slightly different colours but in the same order and wired the same)
From the above:
Black plug electric door mirrors (left) Dual plug (Right)
And the Patch lead that splits it....
And plugged into the Dual plug....
The patch lead Single plug push switch HRW...
The Patch lead rocker switch plug for front fog lights....
This is the rarer than rare push button dual switch ,HRW and front fog lamps to the far right...
The Rare push type dual switch (left) and single push type HRW switch (right)....
This is the single push button HRW switch....
This is the Rocker type HRW switch...
This is the Mk 1 fog lamp Rocker type switch.....
So you will need 2 x plugs with 6" of loom from a breaker..
1 x rocker type HRW switch (or fog lamp switch, more on that later)
1 x rocker type fog lamp switch (or 2 explained further down)
Soldering iron
Solder
Wire strippers
Electrical tape
As a foot note, if the front fog lights are not to be used then you can just fit the HRW switch or visa versa. In this case I will be fitting both and not cutting the OE dual plug off, just in case i find a dual switch so i can cut out whats been added and just plug straight in the future.
So get your 2 x plugs and strip the wire ends and twist....all
So first thing is to strip and twist together the positive ( red with black chaser) and the negative (black ) which are the illumination wires, live at the top ,earth at the bottom on the right hand side looking at the back of the plugs....
In this write-up the Fog light switch is the Black plug and the heated rear window is the Blue switch.
Now into the roadster and pull the plug out through the dash switch hole, and strip some outer flex away ( with your wire stripper or similar) ready for soldering ...
Start with the illumination wires which are
Earth / black 95>97 top left looking at the back of the dual plug
and
live /red with black chaser 95 > 97 top right looking at the back of the plug.
Twist your new plug wires to the dual plug wires where your stripped the flex. Put your soldering iron on the copper wire underneath to heat up and feed the solder onto the top of the copper wire as it heats up so it melts in to it all making a very good solid join...
Now onto the front fog lamp wiring ...
live /red with black chaser 95> 97 bottom left looking at the back of the dual plug
goes to the
middle /bottom looking at the back off the new add in plug,
The Yellow with green chaser 95 > 97 which is switched live to the front fog lights in the second one in from left looking at the back of the dual plug
this goes to the
middle/top looking at the back of the new add on plug,
The front fog light wiring is now finished just the tidying up to do later...
***Foot note****.....the extra wire you can see added to the right of the picture is the add on rear fog lamp i added to the roadster ...because it is an imported JDM roadster they are not built with them for the japanese market...
Now onto the HRW switch wiring..
Live/purple 96 > 97 bottom right looking at the back of the dual plug
goes to the
middle/bottom looking at the back of the new add on plug....
switch live/Blue with a purple chaser 96 > 97 second one in from the right looking from the back of the dual plug
goes to the
middle /top looking from the back of the new add on plug...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just for a reference, this is a 1993 > 1995 dual plug as you can see the wire colours are different, but the layout and connections are the same. I had only connected the HRW connections in the pics for use.....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then it is just a case of using some electrical tape around all the soldered joins and wrapping the whole thing up neat and safe. ( Note I have taped the OE dual plug in also for a later date if required)....
And that's it all done, you'll never know....
Now as a foot note... if you can not get hold of a HRW rocker switch, the OE front fog light switch is the same switch and is plug and play so you can use a front fog light switch for the HRW if stuck, for the same result...
