Postby Mazda Mender » Wed Mar 07, 2018 8:57 am

How do you pronounce the word 'Eunos'?

'Eunos' is pronounced 'You-noss'.
And was a Brand name in Japan only for Mazdas luxury modals ( there were a lot more in the Eunos brand)

Automatic Mazda MX5s

Mazda UK have always neglected this market niche and only produced a small amount of official UK automatics some time in 2001, most of these were produced without air con and other goodies that the japanese spec cars came with.
Ever since the MX5 started production in Japan in 1989 the automatic version has been manufactured but not offered in the UK until the MK 2.5 FL version. Given the increasing number of 'Automatic Only' drivers licences being issued we are seeing more and more demand for this type of car.

This includes the new Mark 3 and the incredible 6 speed gearbox model available , from Japan.

How reliable are Mazda MX5s?

At the time this article was written, the MX5 was currently the 3rd most reliable second hand car you can buy. Mazda are the 2nd most reliable manufacturer. The survey, supplied by Warranty Direct, is used in 'What Car?' magazine and uses actual data gathered by claims made on second hand cars.

ALL manufacturers in the top 10 are Japanese. 2006

See the Reliability Index here. http://web.archive.org/web/200806121506 ... 9010848601 Where does your current car come?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the car's odometer was originally in KMs, what is it showing now?

On Mark 1 Japanese imports all the cars, from the factory, have mechanical clocks indicating the number of KMs the car has travelled.

When a import Mark 1 it is a simple case of changing the face of the speedo face to ensure the speed of the car is indicated primarily in Miles. Even though the speed of the car is indicated in miles the actual distance the car has travelled in its life, the odometer, is kept in KM. you can also fit a mechanical converter drive to the gearbox .

Mark 2 cars have digital odometers. so when imported a converter is installed onto the rear of the dail cluster that converts the speedo into MPH. From the point that the converter is installed (eg: the time it arrives in the UK) the odometer then ticks over in miles. Therefore a little mental arithmetic is involved to get the mileage pinned down.

Example:
A Mark 2 car is imported into the UK with 100,000 kms on the clock (approx. 62137 Miles)
It will be fitted with a converter by the importer which means the clock now ticks over in Miles.

So if the odometer now reads 150000 it means it has done (100,000 kms=) 62137 miles plus (150000-100000=) 50000 miles equals 112137 miles in total.

Clocking is very rare in Japan.

With imported Mark 3 cars the odometeris sent away to a company that converts the digital odometer over to miles AND sets it to the correct equivalent mileage, so the odometer will have the correct mileage showing AND will tick over in miles.

Yes, we know it might sound confusing -

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do you fold down the hood?

On the 1989-2005 model:

1. Undo the clamps on either side of the windscreen
2. (For Mark 1 1989-1997 cars only) Unzip the rear window
3. Fold back the hood.

Yes, it really is that easy!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why on earth would I need air conditioning in an open top sports car?

This is generally a 'once you have it you can't live without it' kind of thing. Because of the size of the interior of the MX5 air-con works extremely efficiently (as does the heating). Like we said before, 'once you have it you can't live without it'!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What engine sizes do MX5s come in?

For 1989-2005 cars, 1.6 and 1.8. Japanese Mark 1's were only built with 1.8 engines after around 1993. The Mark 2 (1998-2000) had a 1.6 and 1.8 versions. The Mark 2.5 FL had a 1.6 and a VVT 1.8 version. The Mark 3 (2005-20015) had a 1.8 or 2 litre options. The Mark 4 (2015 to date )as a 1.5 and 2 litre versions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are the hoods motorised/electric?

All cars built before 2006 have manual (or 'keep fit') roofs. They are very easy to operate and can usually be put up (or down) in well under 10 seconds with practice. If you have a Mark 1 (1989-1997) car with a plastic rear screen, DO NOT FORGET TO UNZIP THE WINDOW FIRST!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What are the automatic gearboxes like?

Absolutely bombproof. Testament, we think you'll find, to Japanese reliability!

The Mark 1 automatic 4 speed gearbox is fairly jerky from 1st to 2nd and as far as we know this was engineered into the box to give it a greater urgency or a more 'sporty' feel.

The MK 1 1.8 automatic is a bit more refined and a smoother gear change

The Mark 2 automatic 4 speed gearbox is even much more refined and a very smooth gear change.

The Mark 3 automatic 6 speed tiptronic gearbox is a world away from the earlier models. There is virtually no pause inbetween changes. You have 3 options when using the auto box: fully automatic where there is no interaction at all between the driver and the gearbox, semi-automatic where the driver can select to go up or down a gear via the '+' and '-' on the auto gearstick or the paddle shifts to go up and down gears via the paddles attached to the steering wheel.

Pah! Surely the MX5 is a GIRLS' car?!?

Far from it. We have found that more than 3/4 of the ownership are men. We have also spoken to plenty of women that complain that their husbands/boyfriends keep 'stealing' their MX5s! People who refer to the MX5 as a 'girls' or 'hairdressers' car obviously have never driven one. They are the best-selling sportscar in the world for a very good reason.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do I open the petrol flap?

If you open the centre armrest there will be a lever to open the fuel flap (on the nearside (passenger) rear of the car) there is also a emergency pull trigger at the fuel lid inside the boot.

****ADD LINK*****
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What type of petrol should I use?

Standard unleaded is fine for these cars. Standard petrol in Japan is a higher octane than here in the UK but unleaded or super-unleaded is fine.

Just don't use the black pump at the petrol station.

Some MX5 owners have had their timing advanced in their MX5s. In this case we would recommend super unleaded or premium fuels, V-power or momentum are recommended to prevent any possible engine damage.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where can I find the chassis number or VIN plate?

The chassis number on an MX5 is on a metal plate on the bulkhead, drivers' side of the engine compartment. On post 1993 cars they are also on a sticker on the drivers' side door shut.

What does NA,NB,NBFL,NC and ND mean

They are a reference for the models and versions...
NA is the Mark 1 from 1989 > 1997 there is a reference to the NA series II which was a re-ash of the Mark 1 1.8 version or Green badge on the Eunos Roadster 1995 > 1997
NB is the Mark 2 from 1998 > 2000
NBFL is the Mark 2.5 or two and a half from 2001 >2005 FL stands for Face Lift , which was the case on the 1.6 version but the 1.8 got a lot more than cosmetics .
NC is the Mark 3, there is also the reference Mark 3.5 and 3.75 as it went through cosmetic changes through production life 2006 > 2015.
ND is the new Mark 4 and is to date , i am sure this version will also go through cosmetic changes through production 2016 to date
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How do I tell the difference between a 1.8 and 1.6 MX5 (Mark 1)?

The easiest way to tell is via the factory fit brace bar between the front seats. Other clues are the chassis number (on Japanese imports it will start NA6CE-XXXXXX for 1.6 and NA8C-XXXXXX for 1.8). Another quick clue are the rear mudflaps. Longer rear mudflaps were fitted to 1.8 cars than 1.6. Looking inside the engine bay a quick glance reveals that the air intake pipe on a 1.8 goes over the top of the engine, whereas on a 1.6 it goes underneath,The Coil pack is on the right hand side of the rocker cover and CAS is on the left on a 1.6 , on a 1.8 the coil pack is on the left and CAS on the right, the lettering on the 1.6 rocker cover is sunken where as on the 1.8 it is raised, there are a lot more but above is a first view, a popular modification these days is swapping engines between models so if unsure check the Vin numbers.

Certain special editions were also only available in certain engine sizes but in general the above is a good guide.

Are there any problems with faulty flip-up lights?

Pop ups were fitted from 1989 to 1997 to the NA MK 1 versions.....

The main issues you get are the hinge bolts seizing from lack of maintenance, the plastic knuckle on the lift arms wearing with wear and tear, lift motors losing their earth or the motor winking ( constantly going up and down) from age/wear and tear, lift relays can fail due to wear and tear/age but that said they are very hard wearing and last for a long long time as is the case with the NA version in general which were over engineered

What registration plate will my imported car get? Will it be a 'Q' plate?

Just like UK cars your car will be assigned a plate in accordance with it's age, so the registration plate will look just like a 'normal' UK car (for example NXXX XXX for a 1996). It will NOT be assigned a 'Q' plate or any other plate that distinguishes it from being 'different' to other cars on the road.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am 6'5" - will I fit into an MX5?!?

This depends on whether you have long legs or short legs! People with longer legs tend to fit in a little more comfortably - the seat can be moved forward and tilted back. We have also removed the adjustment rails on a seat before for a particularly tall customer - this added another inch or so to the headroom (but meant the seat was not adjustable). Also a hard top will give another inch of headroom, but this may not be a satisfactory solution.

In any case it is always best if you try a car out first to see whether you can fit in! The Rover MGF sports car (a close competitor of the MX5) is hopelessly cramped when it comes to tall people.

The Mark 2 car (fixed headlamps) are a touch bigger then the Mark 1.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aren't Japanese cars left-hand drive?

No the Japanese drive on the same side of the road as we do. The steering wheel is on the right.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What's the difference between UK and Japanese (imported) MX5s?

There is only one factory in the world that makes the MX5 and that is in Hiroshima, Japan. Which means, you guessed it, EVERY single MX5 ever built whether it was for the US, UK, Australasia or Japan was built in Hiroshima, Japan. ALL MX5s are imported from Japan. Essentially the cars are identical. Chassis numbers take on a different format, UK chassis numers have are 17 digits long whereas Japanese ones are 10 digits.

Certain models, colours and specifications are only available from Japan.

Most Japanese imports already come with alloy wheels, air con, electric windows and power steering as standard. It is extremely rare for a UK car to have all of these.

The rear number plates are normally square (with 2 rows of digits) on imports, and 1 long line on UK cars

Example:
A UK car will have a registration number that looks like this:
'MEN DERS'

Whereas a Japanese import's number will be spread over 2 lines:
'MEN
DERS'

There are a few other small differences but the rear number plate is usually the first telltale sign.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What size is the Japanese size Licence plate

The perfect size to be cut for your import if staying with the square plate size it left the factory to be fitted with is.....

Japanese size square plate needs to be.... 13" x 6 1/2" or 170mm x 330mm or 17cm x 33cm

The size for the mx5 plates it left the factory to be fitted with is....

English size plates needs to be..... 20 1/2" x 4 1/4" or 110mm x 520mm or 11cm x 52cm

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will a MK 2/ 2.5 NB/NBFL soft top fit a MK 1 NA

Yes it will , straight swap and bolt in place the full frame everything, the Mk 2/2.5 frames are far better than the MK 1 Na's including the the seals ,plus you will have the bonus of a HRW (Heated Rear Window), if swapping out make sure you also fit the side deck rail brackets, and if its off a Mk 2.5 NBFL you will also get the far better made rain rail.
