Mx-5 MK 2.5 double Fog light switch conversion

Postby snowman » Fri Feb 08, 2013 5:19 pm

PART 2
I know this is an old topic, probably not on here, but i decided to go a little further..

I wanted to put a front fog light switch in my MK1 but didn't want to use another switch location on the dash.
So i saw a posting on the OC forum, think it was from M-m, about using a MK2.5 double switch.
Image

Also acquired a heated seat switch, as i wanted to butcher it for parts
Image

The fog light switch only has 1 lit up, i wanted to be different... :-D

Its not wired into the car yet, as you can see from the pics, but i will try to get it done soon

Just need to finish it off and hope for some good weather

Before anybody mentions it, i know the colours are different, makes it easier to see which is on :-D

Does anybody know what these bulbs are?? both of them would help..not in need of them yet, just to keep it mind if they blow, as one has already gone

They are out of the switch

Spot on, i'll drop this as a how to, we did the same thing on ours, just never posted it up, useing a dremal to make the hole and moving over the coloured prism after owners wanted to know just how to get it working, can you also do a how to on the conversion (swithes apart and just how to get them apart and so on) to get both working as a click on click off swithes, it will save me doing it ;0)
It would be ace to do a part one for this, keep them coming, this is what it is all about.
Yeah it was that know all MM bloke, he gets bl**dy everwhere.

You can get the bulbs from maplins, take it with you, the wires wrap around the base and you nip them down.

PART 1

This is how i made my dual fog light switch work in my MK1.

The dual fog light switch is from the MK2.5, i believe, and i wanted to use only one of the switch allocations on the dash, to the right of the steering column.

This the switch as it is, before mod.
Image

This what i wanted it to look like
Image

To do this i had to take the switch apart
Image
Be careful when splitting it down, the plastic can break off in bits and fly off anywhere.
This is what it looks like taken apart
Image

Image

I also bought a heated seat switch and the connector with the wiring still attached.
Image

You need to move one of the wires on the connector, which i didn't take pictures of, but when you look at it, its obvious which one .
I wanted to have the warning lights on both of the switches, so i had to cut a hole in the fog light blank so that the clear plastic in the heated switch could be transplanted to it. Used a small drill and a fine file to finish.
I also painted the new hole with black paint, as the surround was now white and i thought it might show when in place in the dash. It might not have done, but i had the model paint handy.
Image
Image
You need to prise off the front of the heated switch and the fog light switch. Again, be careful, i actually broke the clear plastic part, but managed to glue it back together
Place the clear plastic into the cut hole and replace on the switch.
Image

Take the bulb out of the seat switch and place into the fog light switch
Image
Image
I tested the switch worked before placing it back together.
Image

I haven't yet managed to get it wired up in the car, its a bit wet and cold out, i don't have a garage and I'm a wimp.

Hope i have covered everything. If its not, let me know where, and i will try to put it right.

A bit of a add on...
The switch once converted if you are not messing with putting a indication light in as only one will have it, then here is a quick wiring add on .
I did put a light in ,put never used them in the end any way...

In my case i have them fitted in a MK 1 and Mk 2 the pin outs are the same...

Bottom pic, top row of 4 wires from left to right.......

Black > live/feed in from power
Yellow with red chaser > Loop, live /feed out to light units

Blue > Live/feed in from power
Black > loop Live feed out to light units
----------------------------------------------------
Now it is a personal thing on which way you want the switches to work IE which you choose to be front and back.
The live/feed source is best gotten from the under bonnet fuse box via the main slow blow fuse which is held in place with a 10mm nut, switch power off power first before messing with that main feed, and you MUST fit a inline fuse, personally i would connect to the lighting system for live/feed power so or the ingnition.
