Interesting situation. Dont see how a failed/fouled earth could cause such symptoms. But a few years back a stuck egr valve cost me a ECU and sundries so nothing surprises me with auto electrics.

Sounds like someones having fun. Me, well taxed the MX and saw D*ck Turpin riding off into the sunset with my wallet. MOT testers are a law until themselves. I have one garage who I trust 100% to do the most on our cars.and to be consistent and honest.
